English - Writing

Intent

We want all our children to recognise the importance of writing and become confident and competent writers. We want our children to be exposed to high-level vocabulary to support them to write for a range of audiences and purposes. We want writing to allow the imaginations of our children to flourish and for them to use their writing as a form of effective communication.

Writing

At Oakfield Primary School, we base our teaching of writing on 'The Write Stuff' approach, which has a focus on modelled writing and high-level vocabulary.  The Writing Rainbow is used in all writing lessons and the associated lenses help to provide consistency and progression throughout the school.

Our children learn in a language rich environment and are explicitly taught high quality vocabulary. We believe good oracy is essential so talk can be used as a rehearsal for writing, enhanced by an extensive repertoire of vocabulary which is ‘taught not caught’.

Spelling

At Oakfield Primary School spelling is taught explicitly. In Early Years and KS1, children learn spelling largely through their daily phonic sessions.  In KS2, children are taught spelling through discrete sessions throughout the week. In spelling lessons, children learn strategies to help improve their spellings and they have the opportunity to apply their spelling words to a context.

The spelling words we send home have been organised using statutory spelling lists, as well as including a range of spelling rules that our children need to learn and apply to be age-related writing for their year.

We continuously assess our children through their independent writing and test the children termly to monitor whether they can consistently spell these words.

The spellings we send home are split into 3 sets:

Set 1 – Children are to learn these in the Autumn Term and be tested on them at the end of Autumn Term.

Set 2- Children are to learn these in addition to set 1 in the Spring Term and will be tested on both set 1 and 2 at the end of Spring Term.

Set 3- Children are to learn these in addition to set 1 and 2 in the Summer Term and will be tested on sets 1, 2 and 3 at the end of the academic year in the Summer Term.
